John Hagen

John Hagen is manager of Institutional Repository (IR) Programs and coordinator of the Electronic Thesis and Dissertation (ETD) Program at the West Virginia University Libraries, where he has provided counsel since 1989. He is Chair of the WVU ETD / IR Task Force and guides the development of program policies and procedures. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations since 1998. He created the Appalachian Regional ETD Consortium in 2003 to promote ETD program implementation in the mountain states. He served as co-chair for the ETD2009 International Conference held in June 2009 at the University of Pittsburgh; West Virginia University was a co-sponsor. He is Co-chair for the NDLTD Awards committee and he serves on the NDLTD Communications and Conferences committees. At West Virginia University Mr. Hagen serves as Co-Chair for the WVU Council on Sexual Orientation and is a member of the WVU Social Justice Council. He has served on the Board of Directors as President for Caritas House, a non profit charitable organization serving the needs of individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS and the community through outreach prevention programs in the North-Central West Virginia region. Originally from Flint, Michigan, he studied sociology at Michigan State University where he launched his career at the MSU Libraries. He has published articles in library science journals and ETD symposia proceedings; he has also presented papers at a variety of digital library and information technology conferences. His interests are in ETD / IR implementation issues, multimedia and music/audio production. He is an amateur musician and loves to play jazz; his main instruments are alto saxophone, piano, vocals and percussion. He is an evangelist for the open access and social equality movements.
